Ecclesiastes: Week 1 ~ Day 1

March 21, 2016
Week 1, Day 1

Read: Ecclesiastes 1:1-6
SOAP: 1:1-2

S:
The words of Kohelet, the son of David, king in Yerushalayim: "Vanity of vanities," says Kohelet; "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."

What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun? One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the eretz remains forever. The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises. The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.

O&A:
Kohelet, aka the Preacher, aka Shlomo/Solomon the son of David

 הֶבֶל hebel: vain and empty

1. Emptiness; want of substance to satisfy desire; uncertainty; inanity.
Vanity of vanities, said the preacher; all is vanity Ecclesiastes 1:2.

Sounds like someone who has lost hope.  Vanity of vanities is a common, well-known Hebrew idiom signifying the most or highest of something.  As I discussed this with my sons (ages 15 ½ and 11), we noted that if someone says “heart of hearts” we understand that they mean the deepest part of their heart, or “holy of holies” is the holiest part of the holiest part.

As I read the blog post for some insight, it brought to mind a conversation I’ve had with my sons, in which I shared some insight about mistakes I made in my past (before giving my life to Yeshua, my Savior, and before choosing to really life for YHVH/God).  Because I’ve been down the road of alcohol abuse, I can warn my sons of the impending dangers of abusing alcohol.  Because I’ve been on the path of drug use, I can help steer them clear of those atrocities.  Because of choices I made in the past, I can send off the signals to head them off the course of destruction, much like a lighthouse.  It may not keep them from making the choice on their own to steer clear, but I can (I MUST) offer the warning.  I drew a map saying, “Okay, so you want to get from here to here, right?”  Yes.  “So I can tell you that around this corner, there’s a sniper, waiting to take you out, and the sniper’s name is Alcohol.  Around this bend is an IED, and it’s called Marijuana.  Under this bridge is this, under that path is that, each one named after the snares that I was caught up in.  If you KNEW ahead of time that those vices were lying in wait, would you still continue on the same path?  Or would you get on the RIGHT path, the one that leads to YHVH?”

Today’s scripture also brings to mind the parable of the Prodigal Son.  He went out to do his own will, and subjected (and submitted) himself to his own pleasures and desires, only to realize none of it mattered in the end.  Only the Father.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary states. “1:1-3 Much is to be learned by comparing one part of Scripture with another. We here behold Solomon returning from the broken and empty cisterns of the world, to the Fountain of living water; recording his own folly and shame, the bitterness of his disappointment, and the lessons he had learned. Those that have taken warning to turn and live, should warn others not to go on and die. He does not merely say all things are vain, but that they are vanity. VANITY OF VANITIES, ALL IS VANITY. This is the text of the preacher's sermon, of which in this book he never loses sight. If this world, in its present state, were all, it would not be worth living for; and the wealth and pleasure of this world, if we had ever so much, are not enough to make us happy. What profit has a man of all his labour? All he gets by it will not supply the wants of the soul, nor satisfy its desires; will not atone for the sins of the soul, nor hinder the loss of it: what profit will the wealth of the world be to the soul in death, in judgment, or in the everlasting state?”

P:

Abba, thank You for this reminder of Who we are to serve, and Who we are to love, especially in this self-serving and self-loving society.  What a great reminder of the people who serve You, and sacrifice for You.  Abba, help me to not focus on anyone or anything but You, and to pray for the strength of those who have given their lives to You, and to pray for those who are struggling to serve You, and pray for those who have lost their way, and for those who have doubts, and for those who are sincere in their love for You.  Abba, help me to not be jaded by this world, and not sucked in by the vanity of vanities, the emptiness of emptiness.  You’ve given us a roadmap, letting us know where the enemy lies in wait, and it’s up to us to give heed to Your warnings.  Help us to stay on track with You, not just during this study, but as we continue to grow in Your word, and walk in Your ways.  In Yeshua’s name, Amein.

Week 7 ~ Day 1

GROWING THROUGH PRAYER (A 'LOVING GOD GREATLY' BIBLE STUDY)

February 22, 2016
Week 7 ~ Day 1

Read:  2 Corinthians 12:7-10
SOAP: 2 Corinthians 12:8-9

S:
“Concerning this thing, I begged Adonai three times that it might depart from me.  He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”  Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Messiah may rest on me.”

O&A:
Today is a living testimony to not being able to do things in my own strength.

I’ve been trying so hard to 'gird up' today and get some things (cleaning and organizing, finishing up my Bible study) done, but finding myself unable in my own strength. Abba loves when we come to Him and tell Him how we are incapable, so that He may be our strength and our ability, and He will be glorified in the outcome, and even in the midst.

One of the things that really stood out to me is that he asked 3 times... same number of times Yeshua asked Abba if 'this cup' could pass from him.

Strength: ability, power, mighty work
Perfected: duty of testifying; in the affliction of calamities – everything has been accomplished which by the appointment of the Father as revealed in the Scriptures; must do and bear – made perfect
Weakness: the mental states in which this weakness manifests itself – want of strength: weakness, infirmity
Gladly: with pleasure, sweetly
Will rather: choose; more willingly, more readily
Glory: glory in YHVH; the knowledge of YHVH, intimacy with him, his favors, etc.

Take pleasure in: weaknesses, injuries, necessities, persecutions, distresses à for Messiah’s sake

<<When we empty our cup of our weaknesses, Abba is filling it up with His strength >>

Abba has to bring us to a place of weakness so He can be our strength… His strength on display.

Yes, this is the thought process I go through as I listen to Abba and I meditate on and in His word.  My first reaction is that it’s madness!  Choose to glory in my weakness??  In my pain??  My pain HURTS!!  I’m pretty sure your pains hurt, too, because they’re, well, pain.  His ability (His power) is accomplished in the ‘want of strength’ that we exhibit.  But to choose WITH PLEASURE… Oy vey.  This is definitely a testimony to our Heavenly Father, because we (unless it’s just me) tend to get caught up in what we’re going through, whether it’s pain, injury, depression, humiliation, false witness (for Messiah’s sake), etc.  No matter what the circumstance, we should ‘gladly rather glory in YHVH’.

Our answer is not always “yes, My child”.  Sometimes we are given a definite “No”, and sometimes we must wait.  So do we drop down in a tantrum?  Pout with our arms crossed over our chest?  (That’s my signature move there, btw.)  Do we hold our breath and wait for Abba to give in?  Maybe we try to manipulate Him, or coerce Him, or convince Him?  He wants us instead to glory in Him; He wants us to recognize that His grace is sufficient in all circumstances.  He wants the intimacy of our relationship with Him to cover us in Messiah, to fill us with Messiah, so that we won’t boast of what we were able to do of our own strength, but boast of/glory in the strength, might, and magnificence of YHVH.

The answer to the prayer was not compliance with its petition, but the gift of strength to bear and to endure.” (Ellicott’s commentary)

P:
Oh, my Abba.  You are always on time, and Your word is like an arrow - straight to the target.  You knew last night when I began to read the verses for today that I was going to have to call on You yet again.  You began to sustain me before I knew what need I had of You for this day.  I am weak, Abba.  My mind is more susceptible to defeat when I am in pain, and my spirit feels cast-down the more my body aches, but oh my Abba!  You sustain me!  You lift me up - mind, body and spirit, and I thank You.  You are mighty and worthy of all praise!  I pray that all who feel cast-down in spirit, all who hear voices of defeat, all who carry heavy burdens that are not their own, would cry out to You, Abba, in Yeshua’s name, they would be able to rest in You, and find shalom/peace in Your word.  Abba, I choose this day to glory in You over my pain, and glory in You over my circumstances of weakness, so that You would be lifted up, and the power of Messiah would be made manifest for all who see.

In Yeshua’s name, Amein.

Week 4 ~ Day 2

GROWING THROUGH PRAYER (A 'LOVING GOD GREATLY' BIBLE STUDY)

February 2, 2016

Week 4 ~ Day 2

Read: Psalm 37:7-8

SOAP: Psalm 37:7-8

S:

“Rest in YHVH, and wait patiently for him.  Don’t fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who makes wicked plots happen.  Cease from anger, and forsake wrath.  Don’t fret, it leads only to evil-doing.”

(“For evildoers shall be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn't there. But the humble shall inherit the land, And shall delight themselves in the abundance of shalom.”) vs. 9-11

O&A:
Oh, speak to me, Abba!  Rest in YHVH – to be silent/still for YHVH; patiently and with confidence expecting HIS aid.  Trusting in Him as a child trusts in a good parent.  My boys are 15 and 11 now.  When they were little, they would get lots of scrapes and bruises (comes from being active children, lol).  They still get scrapes and bruises, but what they did back then was to ask Eema (Momma) to kiss what hurt.  And I did!  Knees, toes, heads, fingers, elbows, you name it!  And my sons believed that it was my kiss that took the pain.  They had perfect faith in that instance, not realizing that it was because they trusted that  the kiss would take the pain, they were believing in something.  How many times did Yeshua make mention of having faith like a child

Some examples: Luke 18:17 “Most assuredly, I tell you, whoever doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a little child, he will in no way enter into it."  Matthew 18:2-4 says “Yeshua called a little child to himself, and set him in the midst of them, and said, "Most assuredly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” We must humble ourselves and believe in Elohim and trust in him like a child does for their parent… and wait patiently for Him to answer, to move, etc.

My understanding of verse 7 is that we shouldn’t look to those who aren’t following YHVH, generally, and specifically, those who are prospering although they are not following YHVH.  “Him who prospers in his way”, not Him who prospers in YHVH’s way, but a man who makes wicked plots happen.  This is one who is successful in all things, but not according to YHVH, and not giving all glory to YHVH, the one who is worthy of the glory and praise.

Cease from anger speaks directly to me, as well.  Makes me think of when police officers shout out, “Cease and desist!”  (Do they actually say that, or is that just on TV?)

!”  I actually Googled that, and cease is the stopping, and desist means ‘don’t take it up again’.  Kind of like in Hebrew, the word teshuvah'.

David is saying we’re supposed to abstain from anger (cease) and forsake wrath (desist).  But not just because he said so.. the next 3 verses say that the evil-doers will be cut off, and they will be no more, while those who are humble will shall inherit the land, and will delight themselves in the abundance of shalom/peace.  I need to write this upon my heart, and put a post-it note of it on my mirror!  I sometimes get angry – with situations I have no control over, with things that people say and do, over my own words or actions, and sometimes even over my lack of words or action!  I’m sighing with relief as He reminds me to cease and desist!  How can I say I believe He has it all under control, or as someone said yesterday, “He’s got this!”, yet harbor anger and/or wrath?

A very close friend of mine once gave me a visual concerning anger against someone, and I’m going to change it up just a tiny bit.  Say the anger is a sparked a match in your hand.  Either you’ve struck the match, or they struck it and placed it in your hand.  Someone has caused this anger to rise up, right?  Okay, so what do you now do with it?  Do you hold on to it?  Let’s say you do.  You keep holding it, holding it… and now it’s really hurting!  And you’re mean-mugging the person who you’re holding this fire in your hands (anger) against.  Is the fire hurting THEM?  Is it burning THEM?  Is it THEIR flesh that’s getting damaged?  NO.  It’s YOURS.  It's MINE.  Rather than drop the match, which is a form of letting go, but it’s not going all in for YHVH’s glory.  My overactive imagination says, “If you just drop the match, sure it might burn out, but it could also start a-whole-nother fire, and it might not be so easily contained!”  So what if instead holding on to it, and instead of dropping it, we offered it to YHVH, and let HIM handle it?  Trust HIM with it.  We are then able to cease and desist, and then REST in Him, and wait patiently for Him to move.

P:
Abba, You are always revealing things to me as I search Your word.  You cause me to be vulnerable with You, and then You show me things that are still in my heart, even weeks, years, and decades old.  I realize I have been holding onto matches, and the fire is not only burning me, but it’s sucking up the air I breathe!  The only all-consuming fire there should be in my life is YOU!  All of my unspoken hot spots/fires, Abba, I lift to You right now, in Yeshua’s name!  The angers, the wraths, the hurts, the deceits, the wrong-doings, the ill-spoken words, the hateful comments and thoughts, every single thing Abba that has a hold on me and is sucking out the joy that YOU promised, I give over to You, whether the wrong was done by me, or perceived to be done to me.  I give over to You my anger with people who have spoken ill of and to my husband and sons, who have mistreated them, Abba.  I ask that You forgive me for every spark of anger I have started in anyone else, and I ask that if they still hold the flame against me, my husband, or our sons, that You would speak to into their spirit and reveal this verse to them Cease from anger, and forsake wrath.  Don’t fret, it leads only to evil-doing” – not so that I would be comforted that they’re not angry with me, but so that You would be lifted up, and glorified.  Scripture says that Your word does not go out and return void, Abba, and I am counting on it.  I place my trust in You, YHVH.  Extinguish the flames of anger, wrath, malice… Ignite and fan the flames of Your righteousness, Your mercies, Your forgiveness, and Your love.  In Yeshua’s name, Amein!

Oh man, I really hope y'all don't think I'm some big bag of wind! I try to be short and concise, but I realize that I have a lot of learning to do. Maybe that's why mine are so long? I partially wish I was so confident in the word that I could read the passage and be able to clearly expound on it, but I also don't despise the way that He has put in me to learn. I know that we all have the very strengths and weaknesses that He designed us for. I just really hope that y'all don't get tired of my typing, and more importantly (to me), I hope that I don't ever come across as 'knowing something', or 'thinking I know it all'.
I am learning all the way.
